In December of last year I went on a mission to only buy from locally owned businesses and do my best to buy organic and/or recycled products. What it turned out to be is an insightful journey into my own shortcomings. Yippee!
For the first few months I did really well. I paid attention to where I was purchasing from and I what I was purchasing. The last month or so though it has gone down hill. The reason…I am lazy! There I said it. They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
Well my problem it seems is the need for convenience. If I have to drive too far out of my way or it takes me too long to find what I am looking for I resort to my old ways and frequent places that for my mission to succeed are not the right ones. Which I am starting to think is an ever increasing Global problem.
Information we are wanting can be retrieved in the blink of an eye via the internet. Everyone is carrying a cell phone and if they weren’t profitable restaurants (particularly fast food and coffee shops) would not have drive through windows. It is a society of I want it now and if I can’t get it from you I will go somewhere else!
I am ashamed to say that I have become one of those people. Now that I have admitted it, maybe I will at least be more conscious of the decisions I make, but half of the time (right or wrong) I will probably choose convenience.
So all my favorite local businesses-you need to move to more convenient locations. I can then stop feeling guilty about hitting the Starbucks drive through.

We all need to do the best we can. Driving clear to Sandpoint for cheese is not practical for me. However, getting a large group of people together and gathering 14 cases of organic chickens from MT is!
